Adaptable Mining Communication Systems You Can Count On

Keeping mines safe, productive and under control.

Whether you’re 300 metres underground or stretched across 30 kilometres of open pit, your mine depends on a communication system that won’t falter or fail. But mining is never static. Zones shift, crews move, equipment relocates, and your comms need to keep pace.

At Mobile Communications, we design and build end-to-end radio and connectivity systems that keep working in the toughest conditions.

Our approach is simple: we extend and strengthen the system you already have, integrating it with new technologies, rather than forcing you to start from scratch.

And we know that an effective mining comms solution must deliver:

  • Safety to protect your people — instant alerts and reliable contact in emergencies.
  • Coordination to keep production on track — real-time scheduling of crews, vehicles and equipment to avoid downtime and delays.
  • Supervisory control and data — for monitoring and controlling equipment remotely.
  • Visibility and control across the site — monitoring operations, directing resources and responding quickly when conditions change.

Why Mobile Communications?

We’re not here to simply sell you two-way radios or satellite phones. We build mining communication systems that actually work — anywhere, anytime, incorporating the equipment you already have.

With more than 37 years of experience, we specialise in hybrid connectivity for sites on land and at sea. Where mobile or internet links drop out, we bridge the gap with a mix of radio networks, Satellite coverage and IP-based systems — keeping crews, vehicles and operations connected no matter how remote the site.

Our expertise spans the full spectrum:

  • Frequencies — long-range HF, mid-range VHF and shorter-range UHF radios.
  • Systems & standards — professional, digital and trunked networks that scale with your site.
  • Modern integrations — LTE (Long Term Evolution) broadband, RoIP (Radio over IP) and LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellite solutions that extend coverage beyond traditional boundaries.

We don’t favour one solution or brand and we design to complement what you already have — expanding coverage, improving interoperability and delivering the most cost-effective solution for your site.

  • Mine-ready expertise — proven experience designing and building systems for remote and complex mine sites.
  • Tech agnostic – we pick the best gear for the job from trusted brands like Icom, Codan, Tait, Motorola and more.
  • Interoperability built in– we don’t start from scratch, we build out what you already have, extending coverage and improving reliability.
  • Integration with SCADA networks — connecting multiple devices and pulling critical data from field endpoints to support safe, efficient operations.

Case Study

Remote Gold and Silver Mine, PNG

Papua New Guinea (PNG) brings its own set of challenges: dense jungle, rough terrain, limited infrastructure, and weather that can change in an instant. At a large open-pit gold and silver mining operation in the Morobe Province, these conditions made communications a constant headache.

The site stretched across more than 30 kilometres of broken ground. Crews were often out of line-of-sight, and traditional handheld radios with single channels regularly dropped out when they were needed most. The operator needed a reliable way to keep remote field crews, mobile teams and office-based operations connected, without constant signal failures or complicated channel management.

Our Solution

We designed and deployed a site-wide VHF radio system tailored to the mine’s unique layout. Configured to handle topographic challenges, heavy equipment interference and long-range coverage, the system created a reliable communications backbone. Mobile radios gave every part of the operation — from trucks and dozers to survey teams and the site office — clear, constant coverage.

The result: ground-level connectivity that enabled smooth day-to-day operations and dependable communication between field workers and head office across the site.

What Made the Difference?

  • Site-tuned VHF network designed to cut through foliage, altitude and rugged terrain
  • Fully integrated operations — trucks, dozers, field units and HQ all on one system
  • Zero blackspots — consistent coverage across 30km of difficult terrain
  • Future-ready — designed to scale with HF, LTE or Satellite layers when required

“It’s not about one radio. It’s about your whole site staying connected — underground, topside and off-grid — when everything else goes down.”

Outcomes in the Field

  • 30km+ uninterrupted VHF Radio coverage
  • Clearer coordination between field teams and HQ
  • Reduced downtime caused by comms blackspots
  • Safer shifts and faster response to incidents

In a place where terrain and weather constantly work against you, resilience means more than hard-wearing gear. It means a robust communications system that keeps production high, teams safe and operations in sync.

What Mining Leads Ask Us Most

We design modular, adaptable systems. If your site shifts, your comms won’t fail. We’ll help assess your topography, coverage gaps, endpoints, and power availability then tailor a solution using VHF, UHF, HF, LTE, RoIP or Satellite as needed.

We design failover into every system. If one technology drops out, another will seamlessly take over.

Yes. We start with your existing devices, adding additional technology where it’s needed.
